Flaman People

One of the many great things about working for the Flaman Group of Companies is that we train and promote from within. Many people have been with the Flaman Group of Companies for their entire career! Our hiring philosophy is to hire the person, train the skills and grow our strength from the inside. We have been very successful doing this. That’s why we are interested in who you are as a person, not just your resumé.

What will your Flaman story be?

I started working in the yard for Flaman while I was on summer break from school in Southey. Eventually I moved up and started running the yard in Saskatoon. I was always looking for new challenges, so when an opening came up in Fitness sales it was a perfect fit for me because I knew the products. I jumped at the opportunity to step into management when the Fitness division was ready to expand. I was lucky to be able to have guidance from many great leaders including our founder Frank Flaman. He was one of many great leaders that helped me get to where I am today. I am now the Fitness division manager and I oversee stores across Canada.

Even after all these years I am excited to come to work because every day is different. Flaman is a great place to be successful if you like to take on new projects and take initiative when you see opportunity. I have the freedom to do that here. I am always up for the new, exciting challenges that pop up every day at Flaman.

When I was getting ready to come back to work after having my first baby, I was looking for a change. I had previously been working as a landscaper which had long, irregular hours and that was not going to work for my family and I. After a little job hunting, and a very successful job interview, I started working at Flaman in the Grain Cleaning Division as an Administrative Assistant and I loved it! I learned so much working there, as I’m a born and raised city girl with no farming experience or previous knowledge of the agricultural industry. Everyone was great and very patient about teaching me the tricks of the trade. After about 10 months I was transferred to work at the front desk, and then I moved on to become a Service Writer. I now work in our Service Department with a great bunch of dedicated, hard working individuals.

I enjoy coming to work every day because I love helping out customers, and the people I work with are a blast! With a supportive work team and great hours, it makes being a working mom a little easier. There are many long term employees at Flaman, and that alone makes me feel confident about my future here. I have learned so much working with this company and I am excited to see what other adventures and learning opportunities I can achieve here with the Flaman Group of Companies.

It was February 1997 and I was working for a competitor. I kept seeing Flaman ads in the paper and I knew that there was a market for their products in Yorkton. I went to Rudy Flaman for a job and convinced him to give Yorkton a try. I started in April 1997 by putting some bins and trailers on rented land and I worked from my home. In May I moved into rented premises. Over the next four years the business grew to seven employees. We had outgrown our rented location so we bought a lot and built the store we are in today.

With the new Flaman location business grew even more. Rentals became a big part of our business and Parts & Service grew along with it. Fitness could no longer fit in the main store so it moved in to a separate location. We developed the Flaman brand into one of Yorkton’s main agricultural businesses. We now have close to 30 employees working in Yorkton between both locations.

With the economic growth in the area we saw the potential of expanding the Flaman stores into other communities. In April 2010 we opened a store in Swan River which has three employees and in April 2011 we bought an existing rental store in Moosomin which has now expanded into sales and has 10 employees.

I have been with Flaman for 15 years and over this time my team has developed Flaman into being an integral part of the community and it is recognized as a strong employer throughout the region. As the Yorkton store manager I am now responsible for 3 thriving locations with a team of over 40 and growing. Flaman has allowed me to use my entrepreneurial skills to capitalize on south-east Saskatchewan’s unlimited potential.
